Avoiding Burnout: Mothering and Mastering the Office

An illustration of a modern Black woman balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship. She is seated at a desk working on a laptop, surrounded by soft floral designs in warm, muted tones. A toddler sits nearby, coloring peacefully. The scene reflects grace, balance, and the harmony of managing work and family life.

As a woman juggling the demands of motherhood and entrepreneurship, I've learned that burnout is the enemy of success. Taking care of the home, children, and balancing my work as an entrepreneur and non-profit leader can be incredibly challenging. Not to mention, how can I keep my spiritual life intact, which should be the first thing on the list as a priority?

What I've learned is that we don't have to do it all. This is the problem that most of us think, which comes from watching our moms and how they always seemed to do it all. On the other hand, we are still working to prove society wrong by showing that women can be the CEO of their home and in the office.

I hate to say this, but we do this to ourselves. We keep going and going without taking a break, disregarding self-care, and most importantly, not setting boundaries. This is a recipe for burnout, and it's crucial to recognize when we're reaching our limits.

  • Approach each day with intention- Identifying the high-impact, time-sensitive tasks, and dedicating focused attention to those. The less crucial items can then be scheduled or delegated accordingly, allowing us to be more present and engaged in the moments that truly matter. By doing so, we can find the harmony and fulfillment that we seek, both in our professional and personal lives.

  • Creating Boundaries - Create a small list of non-negotiable, both at home and in the office. One of my non-negotiables with my daughter is that she has to allow me to close out my workday (5:00) before she starts bombarding me with school drama, and help with homework.

  • Creating Balance and Harmony -We have to learn that everything is not of urgency. It's important to prioritize tasks and responsibilities, allocating appropriate time and attention to each. This allows us to be more productive, less stressed, and better able to enjoy the moments that matter most. Some calls and emails can wait!

  • As leaders, we often feel the weight of numerous competing demands on our time and attention. However, by carefully evaluating the true importance and necessity of each item on our plates, we can distinguish between what is truly urgent and what can be addressed in a more measured, thoughtful manner. This skill of prioritization is crucial for maintaining a sense of control and preventing burnout.

  • Delegating Tasks -to those whom you have full confidence will complete to your expectations.

  • Journaling- A tool that can be used to decrease stress and anxiety, explore your inner thoughts, and identify your patterns. Journaling is also known to boost the immune system and help with sleep quality.

  • Train and Trust: Begin training a team member to assist you with your work and trust yourself, by knowing that you fully equip them to complete the role.

  • Spiritual Balance: Plan it into your schedule. Each morning 7:30-8:30 I plan to read, pray, or listen to a sermon to provide stability throughout my day.

Sometimes we take stress and burnout lightly, therefore exploring these tips may just save your life. Burnout for women has led to an alarming increase in health issues, with many experiencing exhaustion, anxiety, and even depression. Recent studies have shown that women are more susceptible to burnout due to the additional pressures and responsibilities they often face both in the workplace and at home.

It is crucial that we address this growing problem head-on. Implementing self-care strategies, setting boundaries, and seeking support can all help mitigate the negative effects of burnout. Women must prioritize their mental and physical wellbeing in order to avoid the potentially devastating consequences of chronic stress.
